Iran Mulls Direct Natural Gas Imports From Turkmenistan

Iran is mulling direct imports of natural gas from Turkmenistan, the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture reported on Sunday, citing the Deputy Petroleum Minister Majid Chegeni.

The negotiations are underway between the two neighboring countries to this end, according to the Iranian Deputy Petroleum Minister.

Chegeni, also the CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company, said that Iran is currently in a gas swap deal from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan under which Iran receives 10 million cubic meters of gas daily from Turkmenistan and pumps the same amount to Azerbaijan.

The official had recently told that Pakistan, Afghanistan and Oman have signaled readiness for receiving gas from Iran.

He also said Turkey has asked for more Iranian gas supplies to the country, adding that experts from both sides are considering the extension of an existing gas contract.

Iran has recorded an increase in the volume of swap gas supplies from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan in the previous Iranian calendar year 1401 (ending March 20, 2023), which shows a 358 percent increase compared to the same period of 1400.
